The Lettuce… An Edible Foliage??

A head of fresh, crisp lettuce leaves…oh, I know, lettuce, not really thought of as traditional foliage but a cluster of leaves, nevertheless…

lettuce, head, green, vegetable, leaves, salad, fresh, annual, crisp

Leaf Peeking: Edible foliage? Salad anyone??

…fresh green cluster of lettuce leaves just a waiting to nourish the next diner with a great source of Vitamin A and potassium…

The lettuce, an annual plant and grown as a leaf vegetable as far back as 2680 BC by ancient Egyptians, soon spread over to Greece and Rome. These ancient cultures believed the lettuce promoted love and childbearing in women.

In addition, Hildegard of Bingen, in her medicinal herb papers, mentioned the healing properties of the leafy lettuce.

Finally, some find snacking on a leafy lettuce leaf prior to bedtime the ideal nightcap…

cat, lettuce, nightcap, feline, snack, iceberg

Leaf Peeking Eating: Yum, nothing like fresh leafy foliage before bedtime…

As you can see my choice of foliage is way off and technically not correct but I just could not resist showing you my kitty eating her lettuce leaf. Her favorite is the Red lettuce but unfortunately, only the Iceberg lettuce was on sale this week…haha!

So, what is your favorite type of  lettuce?

I’m really not a lettuce person, Sunshine–unless of course it’s smothered in freshly made Uncle Dan’s sour cream ranch dressing…bring it on!! (I prefer cabbage–with or without the aforementioned fattening additive.)

Hmm, now Uncle Dan’s sour cream ranch dressing sounds like something I need to rush out and try…I love ranch dressing!!

Thanks for the dressing recommendation, Caddo!! 🙂

I’m pretty sure I could make you an addict, but quick! It’s good as a dip, dressing or on baked potatoes….yummm. (It’s the only thing left from my long-ago marriage that I still like!)

I will have to check and hopefully our grocery store stocks it…you say it is good on baked potatoes? I usually find eating baked potatoes a chore but maybe if it had something exciting like Uncle Dan’s, it could turn into a passion. It may even help me get excited about grocery shopping…don’t mind me, I’m just a mess. 😦

        Have a great Wednesday though…:)

I really don’t know where or how, Susan, this eating lettuce tradition started. Every time the fridge door opens, here comes the lettuce eating kitty looking for some handouts…*sigh*

Thanks for sharing and let us know if your cats take to this tradition as well…:) haha…

    • Sunshine says:

Angelswhisper, this cat would probably eat anything I give her but the only thing I give her is cat food and as she sits by the fridge door begging, she gets lettuce!
Your dinners sound like mine…whatever is available from the market this week…lol!
Thanks for “leafing” your lettuce choices. 🙂
