Has your tongue gone lazy lately? Perhaps without you knowing, your tongue has grown flabby and way out of shape. Not to worry, here is a tongue twister workout to get that tongue rolling back into the swing of things.
In theater, some directors will have their cast members warm up prior to rehearsals and performances with a few, not only impromptu physical exercises, but also repetitive voice warm ups using silly tongue twisters.
Go on, it is a little rough in the beginning, but with daily practice the following tongue twister, written by Dr. Seuss, can be quickly and clearly executed. The main point for practicing tongue twisters is to develop articulation and proper speaking skills.
“If you like to eat potato chips
and chew pork chops on clipper ships,
I suggest that you chew a few chips
and a chop at Skipper Zipp’s
Clipper Ship Chip Chop Shop.”
Whew, a great work out but why stop with Dr. Seuss? Give your tongue a power lift with the hardest tongue twister according to the Guinness World Records:
(Try to say this at least six times as fast as lightning!)
“The sixth sick sheikh’s sixth sheep’s sick.”
Is your tongue all twisty yet?
Right, some of you may be thinking, hmm, why, I think I can come up with a harder tongue twister than that. Here is a simple formula, go for it:
1. Pick a letter. (I select “N”)
2. Use only the words that start with your selected letter to answer the following.
Who? (Nebbish Nelda)
Did what? (named nine)
When? (near noon)
Why? (naturally neurotic needs)
“Nebbish Nelda named nine neighborhoods near noon naturally neurotic needs.”
Finally, try the all time classic tongue twister that gets your tongue-tied at least a couple of times: Red leather. Yellow leather (Say it at least three times as fast as you can.)
Okay, give your tongue a break and be back on set in five…using the above tongue twister formula, be ready to share your unique tongue twister!
